In a surprise move, CCP Games has announced that its in-development fully onchain space survival game EVE Frontier is switching from its current EVM testnet to build on the Sui blockchain.
The transition is surprising because as an object-oriented blockchain, Sui is a structurally different architecture than EVM chains, also using the Move programming language, not Solidity.
This change means CCP Games will have to redo some of its previous work with the current founder access build of game now being ported over to Sui. But when completed, this will add features such as zkLogin for native account abstraction, which allows users to sign in with their email addresses, and companies to sponsored their gas fees.
More generally, as EVE Frontier is likely to be in open development for many years, the sunk costs probably won’t be as high as they might first appear to be.
On the positive side, Sui’s data model is a much better fit for EVE Frontier as it allows the explicit ownership of assets, which make them more composable. Composability of its ecosystem is a key feature for EVE Frontier, as CCP Games wants thirdparty developers to have the same fundamental access to building the game and its universe as the firstparty developers.
In addition, thanks to its parallel execution of transactions, Sui also offers sub-second finality for transactions and is generally considered to be more secure than chains uses Solidity.
In addition to Sui, EVE Frontier will also use the Sui-based decentralized storage platform Walrus and secure onchain data provider Seal.

“Since inception, our mission has been to create virtual worlds more meaningful than real life. With EVE Frontier, we are pushing that ambition further than ever before: building a player moddable universe, bound by its own digital physics, that can outlive us all,” said CCP Games’ CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson.
“As we dug into how Sui is architected, we came across so many familiar concepts, such as how their object-centric approach neatly matches our historic item-centric approach, enabling billions of objects/items, all placed by players, shaping a living universe. For us, Sui offered the unique alignment of architecture, security, and user experience. Together, we’re building a world that can truly stand the test of time.”
