The U.S. federal authorities recently carried out a Bitcoin transfer worth about $606,000 to Coinbase Prime, marking a new development in the long-running case related to the 2016 Bitfinex hack.
The movement, confirmed by on-chain records, involves 8 BTC directly linked to the historic breach of the exchange platform, one of the most serious ever recorded in the cryptocurrency sector.
According to findings by blockchain intelligence provider Arkham, the transaction was traced back to Ilya Lichtenstein, the material perpetrator of the attack who in 2016 managed to steal 119,756 Bitcoin from Bitfinex, equivalent at the time to about $72 million. Today, with the market price of bitcoin close to $74,000 per unit, the value of that same amount reaches the staggering figure of $8.9 billion.
The legal implications: direct restitution to Bitfinex
Unlike what often happens when the government has to manage confiscated assets, in this case the law requires that the recovered Bitcoin be returned directly to Bitfinex and not liquidated to generate state revenue. This aspect represents a substantial difference compared to other cases of cryptocurrency seizures, where the sale of confiscated assets contributes to federal coffers.
The transfer to Coinbase Prime was not an isolated episode: it is in fact the third movement of this kind by government wallets, after those documented on March 3 and April 10, all related to operations for the control and management of recovered digital assets.
The 2016 theft: one of the largest breaches in the history of cryptocurrencies
On August 2, 2016, Lichtenstein managed to exploit a vulnerability in Bitfinex’s multi-signature wallets, fraudulently authorizing over 2,000 transactions and diverting a colossal amount of Bitcoin to a wallet under his exclusive control. The operation was carried out with great technical skill and marked a turning point in the perception of the security of cryptocurrency exchanges.
After the breach, Lichtenstein worked with his wife Heather Morgan in a five-year operation to try to hide the origin of the funds. The strategies adopted included the use of mixing services, transactions on darknet markets, cross-chain transfers and even the purchase of physical gold.
The turning point in the investigations: the recovery of the Bitcoin
In February 2022, FBI investigations led to a major development: agents managed to decrypt files stored in Lichtenstein’s cloud, discovering a detailed spreadsheet with over 2,000 private keys. This allowed law enforcement to gain direct access to almost all of the stolen funds. At the end of the operation, 94,636 Bitcoin were seized, which at the time were worth about $3.6 billion.
The management of recovered assets: Bitfinex’s plans and strategies
During 2025, federal court proceedings established that the confiscated coins had to be returned in kind to Bitfinex, with no possibility for government agencies to liquidate the cryptocurrencies. Bitfinex therefore made public its strategy for managing the recovered assets.
The platform announced its intention to redeem all Recovery Right Tokens still in circulation, digital instruments issued in favor of users who had suffered losses during the breach. In addition, at least 80% of any excess net proceeds will be allocated to the repurchase and permanent removal from the market of the UNUS SED LEO (LEO) token, in line with the commitments set out in the project’s whitepaper.
The judicial consequences for Lichtenstein and Morgan
On the judicial front, Ilya Lichtenstein was sentenced to five years in federal prison in November 2024, while his wife Heather Morgan received an 18-month sentence. Lichtenstein was then released in January 2026, benefiting from the provisions of the First Step Act. After his release, he publicly expressed gratitude to President Donald Trump through the X platform.
The federal wallet: an unprecedented Bitcoin reserve
Currently, federal authorities hold 328,361 Bitcoin distributed across various government wallets, with an estimated value of about $24 billion. In addition to bitcoin, the reserves also include $146 million in Ethereum and other alternative cryptocurrencies. These reserves represent one of the largest concentrations of digital assets held by a public entity worldwide.
The authorities have already announced that the confiscated bitcoin reserves will be used to establish a national strategic Bitcoin reserve program, confirming the growing importance of bitcoin as a strategic asset for national financial security and stability.
Conclusions: a landmark case for the future of cryptocurrencies
The transfer of the stolen bitcoin to Bitfinex and their restitution to the platform represent a significant precedent in the cryptocurrency landscape. The case highlights not only the challenges related to the security and management of digital assets, but also the evolution of regulations and response strategies by federal authorities.
With the recovery and restitution of the assets, Bitfinex is preparing to close one of the most complex chapters in its history, while the U.S. government consolidates its position as one of the largest institutional holders of bitcoin in the world. A case that will continue to set an example in the cryptocurrency sector, amid technological innovation, regulation and security.
