Tillman Holloway explains why your Bitcoin might actually be safer on an exchange than in cold storage
Tillman’s argument is that self custody doesn’t remove trust, it just relocates it. With a hardware wallet, you’re trusting the manufacturer, their engineers, and their firmware updates, and these devices are far more complex than people admit. They can also age out, plug one in five years later and it may not even recognize the device, with recovery paths too technical for the average user. Cold storage, in other words, has to be actively managed like any other risk. His broader point is that insured custodians can silo that risk so a single failure isn’t catastrophic, with enough aggregate value to cover losses.
