The risks nobody warned you about with self custody
The pitch was always straightforward, not your keys not your coins, be your own bank, don’t trust exchanges because the counterparty risk is too high. What that framing skipped is that being your own bank in 2026 also means being your own bank security, up to and including the physical kind when someone decides to rob you. And the counterparty risk never actually disappeared, it just moved. There’s the company you bought the hardware wallet from and whatever happens to their customer data, and there’s the device itself, as Coldcard holders discovered when the entropy generation turned out to depend on how many times you rolled the dice.
