CME is going after Kalshi again, this time over prediction markets
The pattern is familiar by now. When Kalshi got perpetual swaps approved, the CME’s position was that it amounted to gambling, that perps shouldn’t fall under CFTC oversight, and that they aren’t really derivatives contracts at all. The same objections have resurfaced around prediction markets, with CME CEO Terrence Duffy accusing them of tolerating manipulation and insider trading. What makes this round notable is the response, with Selig dismissing the claims as fake news on the basis that the contracts in question are offshore. A federal regulator publicly calling the world’s largest futures exchange fake news is not the picture of regulatory clarity anyone had in mind.
