Offchain CEO Steven Goldfeder says the "L2s are dead" narrative failed to recognize the demand for scale and custom infra
A lot of that even came from inside the Ethereum ecosystem. But there are two things to note. There’s the core scale part, which is Robinhood is doing on the order of 12 to 15 million transactions per day. Ethereum layer one can’t support that, obviously. And Robinhood clearly needs their own production environment. There are a variety of reasons besides scale that one might want their own environment. Even if theoretically Ethereum layer one could support Robinhood’s chain, they may just want their own environment with custom compliance, custom features. They’re running at a speed that’s much, much faster than Ethereum or even other L2s. Robinhood Chain is running at a hundred-millisecond block time, which I believe is the fastest of any chain in production at all, at native block time. The idea is when you have your own little environment, your own, as Vitalik called it in his original blog post on the layer two roadmap, your own little island, it’s just something people are going to want for a variety of reasons. You can customize at will, whether it’s branding, privacy, or compliance. There are so many different ways you can customize it, and we’re seeing real demand among enterprises for their own chain.
