Visa’s legal and compliance teams approved the company’s first blockchain governance proposal, giving it a Super Validator role on the institutional chain where DTCC, JPMorgan, and Goldman Sachs are building.

Visa announced Wednesday it has been selected as a Super Validator on the Canton Network, marking the first time the payments giant’s legal and compliance teams have formally approved a blockchain governance proposal. The company was granted the highest Super Validator Weight of 10, three days after submitting its application.
The Super Validator role gives Visa a vote in Canton’s governance decisions and a commitment to help financial institutions bring payment, settlement, and treasury operations onchain. Canton is a privacy-enabled, permissionless Layer 1 blockchain designed specifically for institutional use, offering protocol-level confidentiality guarantees that public chains like Ethereum and Solana do not. “Many banks see the lack of privacy as a dealbreaker for moving meaningful activity on-chain,” said Rubail Birwadker, Visa’s global head of growth products and strategic partnerships.
Canton has become the chain of choice for Wall Street’s blockchain ambitions. DTCC plans to tokenize a subset of U.S. Treasury securities on the network in the first half of 2026. JPMorgan deployed its JPM Coin on Canton for near-instant settlement. Goldman Sachs, Citadel Securities, BNP Paribas, and Circle are all validators. The network processes more than $9 trillion in monthly volume across 849 validators, with 42 designated as Super Validators.

Visa’s move extends its growing stablecoin infrastructure. The company’s stablecoin settlement operations have reached an annualized run rate of $4.6 billion, with stablecoin-linked card programs spanning more than 130 programs across 50 countries. As a Canton Super Validator, Visa said it will use its Stablecoins Advisory Practice to help clients assess how participation in the network complements their existing operations.
The appointment is notable less for what Visa will do on Canton and more for what it signals internally. A company of Visa’s regulatory footprint formally endorsing blockchain governance, with full legal sign-off, lowers the bar for other payments incumbents considering similar steps.
